Now in its 14th year, the Dieline Awards, one of the largest global competitions for packaging design, has announced its winners for 2023 at HOW Design Live.
Nashville, June 6, 2023 - Yesterday, Dieline announced its 2023 Dieline Awards winners and presented trophies to 143 recipients in 43 categories at HOW Design Live in Nashville. The Dieline Awards, now in their 14th year, remain one of the largest global competitions for packaging design. Sponsored by Neenah and Designalytics, the 2023 Dieline Awards recognize the best and brightest designers and agencies creating product packaging around the world and bring attention to the tremendous value of brand packaging design.
This year Dieline received almost 1,600 entries, with winners from 26 countries. The award-winning recipients offer an insight into where the packaging industry is heading, not only with bold and innovative designs, but also with many brands committed to plastic-free materials. Here you will find some of the best design agencies, studios, in-house teams and independent designers of today.
The awards jury is made up of a range of personalities from the world of design - luminaries including New York-based Brian Collins and San Francisco-based COLLINS, Pentagram partner Natasha Jen, Design Army co-founder Pum Lefebure, Dazzle Studio founder and creative director Zipeng Zhu, ArtCenter College of Design chairman Sean Adams, The Working Assembly founder Jolene Delisle, Gander co-founders Katie Levy and Mike McVicar, A Plastic Planet's Sian Sutherland, Utendahl Creative founder Madison Utendahl, and Stranger & Stranger founder Kevin Shaw. All entries for the awards were judged by a panel of experts in their respective fields. In addition, the awards were judged in five categories - creativity, marketability, innovation, execution and branding on packaging - with each entry going through two rounds of rigorous critique and evaluation.
This year's Best of Show winner went to Sonos' home theater packaging for the Ray and Sub Mini. The win is particularly noteworthy as Sonos continues to implement sustainable packaging solutions for its product line. In addition, Sonos has increased the use of kraft paper and removed over 98,000 pounds of plastic from its packaging.
In partnership with non-profit advocacy group A Plastic Planet, Dieline's Plastic-Free Innovation of the Year was awarded to NYC agency Mythology for the Paperfoam makeup palette they developed for Gen Z favorite beauty brand Half Magic, which highlights how most cosmetic packaging is not recyclable. This award goes to the designers who are driving viable plastic-free alternatives to replace single-use plastic on the market.
The Editor's Choice, an award handpicked by Dieline partners Andrew Gibbs and Jessica Deseo, went to PAPACKS paper blister pack, which offers a compostable and recyclable alternative to over-the-counter pharmaceutical packaging. Most blister packs for tablets and pills are made from plastic, and PAPACKS innovation could be a sustainable gamechanger for all OTC medications.
Dieline's Studio of the Year, awarded to the agency with the most wins in the competition, went to Nice People from Los Angeles after they won for Deon Libra, an adaptogenic elixir inspired by vintage Murano glass perfume bottles. The project won five awards in five categories, including Functional Beverage, Healthcare and Body Care. In addition, the redesign of the year 2023 went to Mother Design for their work on the sustainable period care brand Cora. The redesign focuses on representing the ups and downs that menstruating people experience and opts for a more inclusive, relatable visual identity.
The Designalytics Effectiveness Award was created to elevate the role of packaging design by highlighting the immense financial impact it can have on consumer brands. The selection of winners was entirely data-driven, based on in-market sales performance and rigorous quantitative consumer testing. This year's winning redesign went to Design Bridge for their work on the Basil Hayden bourbon brand, after enlarging the metal belt - the brand's most distinctive feature - and removing the oversized paper label, opting for something sleeker and pearly white, resulting in a 71% purchase preference over the previous design.
The Neenah Innovation in Paper Award, an honor for packaging design with the best use of paper in a design, went to Hagerty Creative for the Radius Welcome Experience Gift, a membership kit for an invitation-only car club that uses Neenah's Classic Techweave paper.
Finally, Dieline's Design For Good award, which is given to the agency or designer that champions important humanitarian causes or social justice issues, went to The Prisoner Wine Company for their collaboration with artist Chris Burnett. The Prisoner is actively involved in raising awareness and providing financial support for justice reform. This includes supporting the Equal Justice Initiative, which provides legal representation for the illegally convicted, those with harsh and unjust sentences, and prisoners facing abuse behind bars.
"Each year, the winners of the Dieline Awards represent the best of the best in consumer packaging and show us where we are and where we are going as an industry"said Andrew Gibbs, founder and partner at Dieline. "With more sustainable and plastic-free winners than ever before, the future of our industry is not just about designing effective packaging for tomorrow's consumer, but also about how that packaging can create a better planet and make a difference in the lives of those consumers."
