Developing packaging for a new product Designed for your product, planned around your date — in molded fiber

A hand sample, sketch or CAD file is enough to get started — we plan design, shape sample and series production backward from your market launch.

Designed from your hand sample or CAD model, checked on the shape sample — design, tool and series production from a single source.

Clarify first

Three questions before design

Starting basis, volume, date: your answers determine feasibility, budget price and schedule — from hand sample to series production.

Starting basis

Is a sketch or hand sample enough to start?

Yes. Hand sample, photos, dimensioned sketch or CAD model: any of these is enough for the initial consultation; we take care of the packaging design. You check shape and fit on the shape sample before the production tool is built.

Volume

Is your volume not yet fixed?

A range is enough for the initial consultation. We develop custom molded parts in Wet Molding from 100,000 units per year per molded part; if your starting volume is below that and your planning foresees growth, give us both figures.

Date

When will you hold the first sample in your hand?

We are happy to send you sample parts from existing projects in advance. Your custom shape sample follows around 4 weeks after the kickoff; from your approval, series production takes around 12 weeks.

Developing packaging for a new product means: from a hand sample, sketch or CAD model, we design a first sample in molded fiber. On the shape sample, you check shape and fit with your product; the production tool and series production follow.

Getting started

What you provide, what you receive

Your product is the starting point. You receive design, shape sample and a schedule aimed at your market launch.

Your information

What you provide

  • Hand sample, dimensioned sketch or CAD model of your product
  • Product dimensions and weight
  • Sales channel and outer packaging with inner dimensions: folding carton, shipping carton or shelf
  • How your product goes into the packaging: by hand or on the line
  • Your market launch date
  • The planned annual volume, a range is fine
  • Your brand presence: logo and texture as embossing, fiber color

Our deliverables

What you receive

  • Feasibility, budget price and schedule as a guide within a few days
  • Design and shape sample for your product
  • Sample parts from our development, matched to your project
  • The data sheet for your molded part with dimensions and tolerances
  • For food contact, the declaration of conformity according to Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 for your molded part, with the initial sampling from the production tool
  • How we share your tooling costs depends on annual volume and term — in Wet Molding, up to full coverage; the terms are set out in your quote (Custom Engineering)

From first conversation to series production

How your packaging is created

Four steps from the first question to running series production — design starts from your hand sample, your sketch or your CAD model. You give approval at three points: development after the budget quote, the production tool after the shape sample, the start of production after the pre-series.

Consultation over a molded part in the development center

01

Initial consultation

You tell us product, dimensions, sales channel, volume and your market launch date. You find out whether your date is achievable and receive feasibility, budget quote and schedule as a guide — the binding quote follows after development. Within a few days.

02

Samples and examples

Sample parts from our development, matched to your project: you assess material quality, feel and appearance on a real molded part.

03

Design and prototype

Design and CAD based on your reference, shape sample for the fit test with your product, prototypes for your tests — then your approval. Around 4 weeks after the kickoff.

04

Tool and series production

Production tool made in-house, pre-series and initial samples from the production tool, then ongoing series production — stacked on pallets, delivered according to your call-off schedule. Around 12 weeks from your approval of the shape sample.

The times are planning estimates; they depend on your approvals, the capacity of our teams and the scope of your project. Your project team at PAPACKS presents the detailed plan around 1–2 weeks after the kickoff. You receive the process and budget quote as a guide after our initial call — with development, tool and unit price; the binding quote follows after development.

Frequently asked questions

What customers ask before market launch

Yes. A hand sample, a dimensioned sketch or a CAD model (STEP or IGES) is enough for the initial consultation; we take care of the CAD design. Product dimensions, weight and the outer packaging in which your product is sold or shipped are helpful. The shape sample shows you the design before the production tool is built.

You clarify that on the shape sample. If the dimensions or shape of your product change, we incorporate the change into the CAD model, and you check the fit on the next shape sample. We set in the kickoff how many shape samples your project needs; further iterations are possible and are listed with a price in your quote. The production tool is only built once you have approved shape and fit.

Tell us your starting volume and planned ramp-up: in a consultation, you will learn whether and from what volume your own shape pays off. We develop custom molded parts from 100,000 units per year; the volume counts per molded part. If a standard product suits your product, start with that: for calendars and gift sets, the Advent calendar, for snacks, the Snack & Nacho Trays, for shipping fresh fish, the Fiber Box.

First, you receive sample parts from our development, matched to your project. After the kickoff, which follows directly after the consultation, the detailed plan is ready in around 1–2 weeks and your first shape sample after around 4 weeks. From your approval of the shape sample, we build the tools, run in the line and start the pre-series — around 12 weeks until series production. Tell us your market launch date: we plan backward from it and tell you in the initial consultation whether it can be reached with these planning estimates. All times are planning estimates and depend on approvals and capacity; binding dates are set out in your detailed plan.

Logo, lettering and surface texture are created as embossing directly in the production tool. Standard is white or natural white; on request, we dye the fiber in your color. We define the position and depth of the embossing with you on the CAD model; your outer packaging carries the printed design.

After development. In the initial consultation, you receive feasibility, budget price and schedule as a guide within a few days; the budget quote lists development, tool and unit price separately. The binding quote is based on the design you have approved.
